Heatstroke
During the summer months, people across the US like to get outdoors for various forms of recreation. In many states, the temperature in the summer months may be in excess of 100 degrees. Though outdoor recreation is enjoyable for many, the heat can pose a health risk.
Heatstroke is a very real threat during the summer, and can even be fatal for some individuals. If you lost your loved one after he or she suffered a heatstroke, contact the Pennsylvania wrongful death lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 610-667-7511 to learn if negligence may have been involved.
Overheating and Negligence
Heatstroke usually occurs when an individual’s body temperature reaches 105 degrees Fahrenheit or greater. For comparison, a healthy human body usually runs at around 97 or 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Individuals suffering from heatstroke may stop sweating and begin to experience confusion or disorientation. Some may lose consciousness.
Individuals may be at greater risk for heatstroke when they are:
- Dehydrated
- Consuming alcohol
- Using stimulants
In addition, some individuals are physiologically predisposed to heatstroke. Heatstroke is a serious medical condition that requires immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, if treatment is not administered in time, severe medical complications can occur.
In some cases, deaths resulting from heatstroke may be considered the result of negligence. For example, if a property owner fails to provide adequate shade or hydration for guests, or if a medical worker fails to treat heat stroke in a timely manner, these parties may be found liable for losses suffered by the victims’ families.
