Risk Factors for Brain Injuries
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is damage to the brain caused by a blunt force or by sudden, violent movement of the head. It is a leading cause of disability and accidental death in the US. Every year, about 50,000 Americans are killed by injuries to the brain.
One painful truth about head injury-related deaths is that nearly all of them are preventable. By observing reasonable safety precautions, people can greatly reduce their chances of suffering from brain injuries or causing them to others. If someone’s reckless behavior has caused a fatal injury to someone you love, the Pennsylvania wrongful death lawyers at Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. can help. Call us at 610-667-7511.
Risk Factors for TBI
Traumatic brain injuries have been correlated with certain behaviors and characteristics. Some of these risk factors include:
- Gender (Males are almost twice as likely to experience TBI.)
- Race (African Americans are more likely than other races to suffer fatal TBIs.)
- Age (Children under 4 and teenagers between 15 and 19 suffer the most TBIs.)
The most common causes of head injuries are accidents involving:
- Car crashes
- Falls (including slip-and-fall accidents, diving injuries, etc)
- Collision with moving or stationary objects (including many sports injuries)
Sadly, not all fatal brain injuries are accidental. Assaults also account for many of these injuries, particularly assaults involving firearms. About 90% of brain injuries involving firearms are fatal, making them the most dangerous kind of TBI even though they are not the most common.
