After a month-long trial, two administrators of a federally funded social services program were found guilty in the death of a 14-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. She died of severe bed sores and malnutrition in her mother's apartment, authorities said. The two were found guilty of health care fraud and conspiracy, receiving money from the federal government, channeled through the city, for home visits and other services they did not actually perform. One still faces a trial for involuntary manslaughter for the girl's death.
Two caseworkers received mixed verdicts from the jury. The agency was accused of tolerating and encouraging caseworkers to skip visits and fabricate reports. The agency was supposed to provide care for teens and at-risk children through funding from the city's Department of Human Services but has since folded.
