A 19-year-old man died when his car caught fire at a Pennsylvania gas station Friday morning, authorities said. The fire was started by static electricity while refueling, police said. Authorities said the man died from inhaling superheated gases from the fire. The man's body was found lying beside his vehicle, which was on fire along with the gas pump.
Authorities say that only one similar fatality has been recorded. That incident occurred in Oklahoma in 1996. Non-fatal fires started by static electricity when refueling also seem to be rare, according to authorities. Static electricity can build up when a person gets back into his or her car during the refueling process. Authorities warn against this.
