One person was killed when two Union Railroad trains collided Tuesday in North Versailles, Pa., authorities said. A southbound train carrying iron ore pellets crashed into a northbound train with empty cars, derailing several cars of the southbound train. An employee said the northbound train, coming from the steel company's plant in West Mifflin, hit two cars of the southbound train.
The accident occurred near a U.S. Steel plant, authorities said, and about 1,200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a nearby creek. Some iron ore pellets spilled down an embankment as well, authorities said. Hazardous material personnel were called to the scene for damage control, authorities said.
