A hospital in Erie, Penn., is facing a wrongful death lawsuit, filed Friday, that claims the hospital incorrectly labeled itself as a trauma center when it did not have adequate staff or blood to treat a trauma patient. The lawsuit was filed by the wife of a man who died at the hospital after a 2008 motorcycle accident. He suffered blood loss leading to death while waiting to be transferred to another hospital.
The suit charges that the hospital used the wrong blood type in transfusions until it ran out of blood and did not have staff qualified to treat the man’s injuries. Mechanical problems and weather caused them to have to wait two hours for helicopter transport to the other hospital. The man was conscious and talking when he initially arrived at the hospital, authorities said, but he died just as the helicopter arrived.
