Allentown pays $600,000 in wrongful death settlement

Posted on Friday, June 17th, 2011 at 10:08 pm

The City of Allentown, Pennsylvania recently agreed to pay $600,000 in a wrongful death settlement to the family of a boy that was killed in a tragic car accident in 2007.

The 4-year old boy was standing on a sidewalk in the city when two Allentown Police Department vehicles collided.  One of the vehicles continued onto the sidewalk and struck the boy and a friend.  The 4-year old was killed in the accident.

State police investigated the accident and found that a rookie officer involved in the accident ran a red light, causing his vehicle to collide with the other police vehicle.  The officer was fired from his position with the police department but not charged in the accident.

The boy’s mother filed the wrongful death lawsuit claiming that the department’s decision to hire the officer with previous drunk driving and speeding charges was a violation to her son’s civil rights.
