Family of former NFL player file lawsuit against NFL
Posted on Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 at 6:21 pm
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the NFL on behalf of the former NFL player, Dave Duerson. The family of Duerson is claiming that the NFL covered up the harmful effects of concussions, thus leading to Duerson developing irreversible brain damage.
Dave Duerson died after he shot himself in the chest in February 2011. His autopsy showed that Duerson was suffering from advanced brain damage, which directly affected his untimely death. His family believes that the NFL purposely covered up the harmful side effects of Duerson’s concussions during his career as a football player, as well as after his career had ended.
The lawsuit was filed by Duerson’s son, as well as three other children. They also name Riddell Inc., the helmet manufacturing company, as a defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit. Their helmets were not well suited for the professional sport they were used in, and allegedly led to the increased risk of concussions on the field.

A 29-year-old roofer fell 42 feet to his death after he lost his balance on a motel roof in August 2009 in Pennsylvania. The man’s construction supervisor at the time of the accident has pleaded guilty for his part in his death.
The owner of the construction company received a fine of $539,000 due to a violation of safety at his company. Both the owner and the site supervisor covered up the violation. When the man fell from the roof, there was no fall protection in place. In order to avoid another violation, the man put the protective barrier in place after the worker died.
The violation was uncovered and the supervisor was charged with violating safety rules that led to the man’s death. He was sentenced to three years probation, with six months of that time being spent under house arrest.
